Mamluk Geometric design in Cairo (1250-1517)
Eric Broug, Author, Educator and Founder of the School of Islamic Geometric Design
The Mamluks were responsible for some of the most exquisite masterpieces of Islamic architecture and geometric design. Using examples from the Mamluk heritage, Eric Broug will first explore some of the basic principles that underlay this design heritage before moving on to demonstrate what was unique and exceptional about Mamluk geometric design.
Eric Broug received his Postgraduate Degree in the History of Islamic Art and Architecture from London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). Originally from Holland, he now lives in the North of England, where he runs a design consultancy and the School of Islamic Geometric Design: www.sigd.org. He is the author of several popular books on Islamic geometric design including: Islamic Geometric Patterns (2007) and Islamic Geometric Design (2013).
